Bosul Kim is a media artist whose practice is grounded in Eastern philosophy and explores the organic interconnectedness of humans, nature, life, and the environment. Moving fluidly across the boundaries of reality and virtuality, media and performance, her work visually reveals a cyclical worldview in which humans, nature, and nonhuman beings exist as part of a continuous flow rather than as separate entities. By reinterpreting archetypal Eastern thought and holistic worldviews through contemporary perspectives, she combines advanced technologies with artistic inquiry to construct new sensory spaces and temporal experiences.

Her works draw inspiration from Eastern philosophy, mythology, and folklore, expanding toward reflections on contemporary environmental crises such as climate change and rising sea levels. Centered on the idea that all beings, from microscopic life forms to the cosmic scale, are interconnected through cycles of transformation, her practice challenges anthropocentric perspectives and investigates possibilities for coexistence with nonhuman entities. In this process, scientific data and Eastern modes of thought are organically integrated, forming a cohesive and comprehensive worldview.

Bosul Kim works across a wide range of technology-based media, including animation, AI and XR, motion capture, telematic performance, and the metaverse, to create immersive and multilayered sensory experiences. Her practice explores new forms of existence at the intersection of the physical body and digital presence, moving beyond visual spectacle to expand perception and sensorial awareness while proposing new ways of thinking about future life and ecological systems.

Her work has been presented internationally at venues such as Times Square in New York in 2022, the Korean Cultural Center in Paris from 2022 to 2023, the Society for Arts and Technology in Montreal in 2023, NFC Lisbon in 2025,and the Prague Quadrennial in the Czech Republic in 2011. In Korea, her work has been exhibited at KIAF in 2024, Paradise Art Lab in 2024, Ulsan Museum of Art in 2023, Art Center Nabi in 2023, and the Seoul Arts Center in 2015. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Digital Art at Seoul Institute of the Arts, where she continues her research and artistic practice. She previously served as the Korea Director of CultureHub, a global platform dedicated to the convergence of art and technology, leading a wide range of international collaborative projects.

HAERA: Remembering the Deep

The climate crisis is no longer a future possibility but an ongoing reality. Recurrent news of torrential rains, storm surges, flooding, and displacement reveals how environmental change is directly intervening in human lives, collective memory, and the sustainability of culture. HAERA: Remembering the Deep begins from these contemporary conditions and envisions the post climate change world by imagining the deep sea as an alternative habitat, offering a renewed perspective on the relationships between human and nonhuman beings.

Over the past several decades, global average temperatures and sea levels have risen rapidly, placing coastal cities and ecosystems under structural threat. As sea levels continue to rise, vast numbers of people are expected to lose their homes and be forced to relocate, while local languages, cultures, and memories gradually disappear in the process. Climate change thus operates as a comprehensive crisis that extends beyond environmental concerns into intertwined social, political, and cultural dimensions.

HAERA - Remembering the Deep constructs an expanded worldview through the presentation of the seven minute digital animation HAERA: Ocean Reborn, the three minute new animation HAERA - Echoes of Memory, and works combined with augmented reality(AR). The exhibition centers on the fictional city of Haera, a space where meanings of ocean, circulation, light, and existence converge, symbolizing a habitat newly reorganized after climate change. Within this world coexist hybrid beings formed from humans and fish, organic structures interwoven with coral and mycelium, and life forms that store and transmit memory.

The new work presented in this exhibition, HAERA - Echoes of Memory, begins in an idealized landscape reminiscent of traditional blue and green mountain painting and gradually descends into the deep sea, exploring future marine ecosystems. Throughout this downward journey, familiar landscapes disintegrate, and new hybrid beings emerge from a convergence of natural remnants, traces of civilization, and fragmented memories. Crossing the boundaries between nature and the artificial, human and nonhuman, these entities symbolize the persistence of life after destruction and present a glimpse of ecosystems newly organized under altered environmental conditions.

This narrative reframes the ocean as both the result of destruction and a space that holds the potential for recovery. Blue carbon ecosystems such as seaweed forests, seagrass meadows, and tidal flats function as invisible reservoirs that have absorbed vast amounts of carbon emitted by humanity, offering important clues for imagining responses to the climate crisis. The ocean is thus proposed not as an endpoint, but as a condition for another beginning.

Within the exhibition space, visitors encounter scenes of the deep sea and a submerged city unfolding across a media wall, while augmented reality in front of the screen overlays and reveals the world of ‘HAERA’. Acting as a device that summons memories submerged in the abyss into the present space, augmented reality enables visitors to follow fragmented traces and experience a self constructed narrative rather than a linear storyline.

HAERA: Remembering the Deep does not fix the post climate crisis world within images of catastrophe or finality. Instead, it asks what kinds of habitats may still be possible under altered conditions, and how humans and nonhuman beings might reconfigure their relationships. By calling forth memories of worlds that are disappearing, this exhibition proposes a speculative space for thinking through futures that have yet to arrive.
